A trip down Gears of War Lane takes us on a brief journey of my favorite Video Game Series, of which MUST be made into movies.
Gears of War came out on Xbox 360 in November 2007.
When this game came out I was actually not heavily into gaming. I did have the Playstation, an old Nintendo 64 etc however I hadn’t dipped my toe into the immersive world of gaming.
I remember going to some friends place one night for an old school and my first LAN party. Playing the game Gears of War against all our mates in the versus arena. I was instantly addicted to the game play, the graphics, the gore, the comradery and the killing your friends online.
Every afternoon after school I would go past my mates place who had a 360 just so we could play either versus or online getting more and more addicted to the world. One afternoon several weeks later, I had put aside enough money and I walked my arse to the local game store and bought a GoW Xbox 360 bundle. Straight home to setup on what was a big screen at the time of a good ole 32 inches.
Getting myself amongst the campaign of GoW and lets just say I didn’t remove myself from the screen for a very long time. I had the campaign complete on normal, hard and veteran as quickly as I could. I even went and bought the family a new router so that I could start my time online gaming. And this did not help my addiction to that game.
The game is a third person shooter that introduced me into not only online gaming, but the gore that can come with a next gen console. The weapon of choice being a lancer with a chainsaw on the bottom of it. Simply go up to a downed opponent and put the chainsaw straight through their chest. Or simply give them a good ole curb stomp to remove the top half of their head. It was truly an extremely gory game, however the gameplay was incredible, working on reflexes, tactics, and comradery to gain you the win both in the campaign, and the versus matches.
GoW has since expanded to a series of 5 campaign games following the Story of House Fenix. GoW 1-3 follows Maqrcus Fenix with 4-5 picking up with Marcus Fenix son, JD. There are also DLC expansions to the above games and a prequel that followed some of the other main characters from the series.
Whilst GoW is an incredible gameplay experience, the story that it is developed upon is truly incredible. Both Shani and I cried during this game, and for those who have played it, you know exactly where!!!. Gears of War is easily my favorite series of video games and I find myself going back to play the campaign often. I even have a tattoo of the Fenix emblem from Macus’ headband on my arm.
Go out and play these games, you will not regret it.
